About Us

The Computer for Schools program is a joint initiative of the Government of Canada, the Government of Manitoba, and the MTS Volunteers. Our purpose is to recycle surplus computer equipment to benefit schools, libraries, literacy, volunteer groups and Community Access sites located in Manitoba.

The program is directed by a Provincial Advisory Board. This advisory board establishes the criteria for eligibility on an annual basis, and generally oversees the program operations.

MTS Volunteers, students on work experience and other volunteers, test, clean and refurbish equipment before it is provided to schools and other eligible clients.

Most of the equipment comes from a business environment and is primarily made up of IBM compatible type systems.  Donations include printers and various computer peripherals. Equipment is brought to working condition by volunteers, students, and temporary employees. Vintage computers fill the need for keyboarding skills and exposure to computer concepts.

Since 1995, over 42,000 computers have been provided to Manitoba schools and other clients by the program.
